Caring for dry skin
Avoid using tap water on your face
The deposits in tap water are too drying on the skin. Use mineral water to freshen your face.
Cleanse and moisturise regularly
Use a cleanser formulated for dry skin, not soap and water. Use a moisturiser to increase the water content of the outer layer of skin. Always cleanse your skin with non-detergent, neutral-pH products.
Bathe in warm water
Take short baths or showers and use warm – rather than hot – water, as hot water robs the skin of moisture. Use a soap substitute such as Epaderm® Ointment. Epaderm Ointment can also be used as a bath additive. Avoid perfumed bath oils and shower gels, which can dry the skin even more and irritate sensitive skin. Pat, rather than rub, your skin dry after washing. Apply moisturiser or emollient while your skin is damp.
Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water
Make sure you’re getting enough fruit, vegetables and protein. Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated.
Avoid excessive alcohol
When you drink alcohol, your body and skin can become dehydrated. Drink plenty of water to avoid drying out your skin and always keep to the recommended drinking limits for alcohol.
Be sun sensible
Sunlight contains ultraviolet rays, which are the main cause of skin ageing and can cause skin cancer. Avoid going out in the sun between 11am and 3pm. When out in the sun, always use a sun cream with a high sun protection factor (SPF).
Stop smoking
Smoking causes wrinkles and a leathery complexion, which makes the skin look old before it should.
